My work is primarily about colour and texture. I aim to capture the essence of the subject with a light and lively use of the pastel. Many subjects inspire me from the rural environment I live in to a still life set-up in my studio, if I manage to take a foreign holiday then pictures will appear from that.
Inspiration also comes from the medium itself; opening up a box of pastel is a sheer delight - pure pigment in stick form! I love the vibrancy of the colours; it’s versatility and immediacy and try to exploit all the qualities it offers from light sweeps of colour using the side of the pastel stick to thick impasto marks, hence the term “painting with pastel”
